There are a lot of great films for kids being made today, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to give your child a taste of classic American film too. If you’ve been cooped up all winter watching http://www.directstartv.com/localchannels/Louisiana/N/New-Orleans/ channels due to the cold you may find some relief in some of these southern film classics. Get out the sweet tea and grab a fan, it’s hot in here!
Gone With the Wind – The quintessential southern film, GWTW still holds up after all this time. It’s one of a kind in its genre and it’s about as southern as the word ‘y’all’ if you want to feel like you’ve died and gone to Atlanta, watch this film.
To Kill a Mockingbird – Set in Alabama in the 1960s, To Kill a Mockingbird is all at once a great period film, a well-acted movie and an entertaining drama to boot. If you’ve never seen it now’s the time and for heaven’s sake, read the book!
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil – Set in Savannah, Georgia, Midnight isn’t all that ‘classic’ but it will be in 20 years. It’s a riveting murder mystery and a great example of the modern genteel south – it’s almost as good as the book that preceded it.

There was a time you knew what cult classics where because every town had its midnight movie. Films represented at these showcases became cult classics because while not available in the mainstream they still had a venue. These days with technology streaming any movie you can think of, the cult classic can get lost in the fray. The following films are cult classics because of their small but dedicated audience.
