There are a lot of great films for kids being made today, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to give your child a taste of classic American film too. While some may complain that old movies are too stuffy and boring for children to enjoy, we disagree! Here are five movies every kid should see that were made before the 1970s.

1. The Wizard of Oz (1939). It’s a classic musical for a reason. Although the Wicked Witch might scare very young children, the brilliant colors and catchy songs will make them smile.

2. Fantasia (1940). This is an especially great movie for younger viewers, who will enjoy the beautiful animation and the music without demanding a linear plot.

3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Walt Disney’s first movie still holds up for kids, who will enjoy the dwarfs’ antics and the fairy tale ending.

4. Mary Poppins (1964). This is one kids and adults can easily enjoy together. The adventure is fun and entertaining, but it’s also a very moving story about family.

5. The Sound of Music (1965). If your kids liked Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins, they’ll love her in The Sound of Music too! It may be a little long for your littlest ones, but elementary school-aged children will love the songs.

Robert De Niro may have spent the last fifteen years acting in cheesy comedies and kids’ movies, but he was once considered one of the best actors in Hollywood. His work with Martin Scorsese gave us some of the most unforgettable characters and incredible movies of all time. Here are some of his most truly memorable roles.

1. The Godfather, Part II (1974). This sequel to the classic gangster movie tells its story half in the present, half in the past, with De Niro playing young Vito Corleone. He brings life and a fascinating back story to Corleone.

2. Taxi Driver (1976). Travis Bickle is an angry, mentally ill young man determined to take down the government wherever he can. Who can forget his iconic line, muttered as he examines himself in a mirror, “You talkin’ to me?”

3. Raging Bull (1980). De Niro famously gained 60 pounds and learned boxing to portray Jake LaMotta in this biopic that charts the rise and fall of the boxer’s career. Now that’s dedication.

4. Goodfellas (1990). Once more, De Niro tackles a gangster role, this time completing a perfect cast alongside Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. Nobody plays tough like De Niro!

Get out the sweet tea and grab a fan, it’s hot in here!
Gone With the Wind – The quintessential southern film, GWTW still holds up after all this time. It’s one of a kind in its genre and it’s about as southern as the word ‘y’all’ if you want to feel like you’ve died and gone to Atlanta, watch this film.
To Kill a Mockingbird – Set in Alabama in the 1960s, To Kill a Mockingbird is all at once a great period film, a well-acted movie and an entertaining drama to boot. If you’ve never seen it now’s the time and for heaven’s sake, read the book!
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil – Set in Savannah, Georgia, Midnight isn’t all that ‘classic’ but it will be in 20 years. It’s a riveting murder mystery and a great example of the modern genteel south – it’s almost as good as the book that preceded it.

There was a time you knew what cult classics where because every town had its midnight movie. Films represented at these showcases became cult classics because while not available in the mainstream they still had a venue. These days with technology streaming any movie you can think of, the cult classic can get lost in the fray. The following films are cult classics because of their small but dedicated audience. They are good films, lost in genre or left off of mainstream advertising budgets. Still they are quality movies with a following;

Plan 9 From Outer Space – 1959
While many people have heard of this its better than people think. Ed Wood offers Bella Lugosi in this classic genre mix up.

Pink Flamingos – 1972
John Waters, director and cult master creates characters you just know are real. (Not family appropriate, watch when the kids are away).

White Heat – 1949
James Cagney is well know, but not for one of his very best films. This intense dramatic gangster film sets the precedent for all others.

Once Upon the time in the West – 1968
Magnificent Henry Fonda, killer mad man. You won’t believe it until you see it.

We all love movies and whether its action, comedy or drama there are always those movie quotes that we never forget. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the undisputed leader and nobody can say them quite the way he can. I bet you’ll remember these:

“I-LL BE BACK’
The king of all movie quotes this one liner came straight out of the mouth of Arnold in “Terminator 1′ making it the most used move line ever.

“HASTA LA VISTA, BABY’
Here is another quote that is widely repeated and well known for Schwarzenegger. It again came out of the “Terminator’ franchise, making “Terminator 2′ another hit movie for Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“GET TO THE CHOPPER!’
The movie “Predator’ gave Schwarzenegger this popular quote that is repeated over and over still today and remains a classic in the world of one liners.

“IT-S NOT A TUMOR’
“Kindergarten Cop’ showed Arnold as an undercover cop posing as a kindergarten teacher in which he responds to a child-s complaint of a headache. Enduring movie with great lines!

“CONSIDER THIS A DIVORCE’
The perfect line straight from “Total Recall’! When you need that one line as you walk out of a relationship well, here it is. Thanks Arnold!

When choosing the funniest movies of all time there are a lot of movies to consider and the type of comedy is also vast. Screwball, spoofs, outrageous, and even dark comedies all have to be considered.

5. Dumb and Dumber- Jim Carrey has always had the ability to make us laugh and with dumb and dumber he was hilarious. Many say this is one of the comedies that launched the Farrelly brothers into comedic genius.

4. National Lampoon’s Animal House- This 1978 comedy is full of funny moments and is considered one of the best national lampoon movies. You can find a quick rundown here This fraternity movie was actually based on some of Chris Miller’s real experiences. Miller is the screenplay writer for the movie

3. Blazing Saddles- This may be one of the only Western comedies out there. Mel Brooks is one of the greatest comedic talents and this movie displays that in every way.

2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail- This highly quoted comedy was based off the BBC television series Monty Python’s Flying Circus. This comedy is considered by many to be one of the most memorable and funny movies of all time

1. Airplane- The original spoof movie has had watchers rolling in laughter for the past 30 years. This movie is the reason we had the naked gun series and the scary movie series as well.

Sports films bring out the emotions in everyone ” tears, anger, elation. These films bring us to life.

The underdog has always been a major subject in sports movies. One of these all time underdogs was “Rocky’. How many of us cried and cheered with Rocky Balboa? We traveled the road with him, from his beginnings to his triumphs to his downfalls and his return again.

“Hoosiers’ is another of the underdog films. In this movie we are dealing with a team, not an individual. You can still feel the pain and the glory for more than one.Didn-t catch that? This explains it.

As much as there is the seriousness in the sports arena, there is the comedy. One of the all time great comedic sports film has to be “Caddyshack’. Released over 30 years ago, this is one of those movies that can still be quoted and re-watched over and over.

Not quite a direct sports film, “Jerry Maguire’ introduced us to the business side of the sports world. The emotions are here too, but coming from a different angle.

For those who think sports is always about the money ” “Chariots of Fire’ is a must see. This is what makes a champion.
